President’s Cultural Foundation announces competition for Young Scientist Award

The amount for the Young Scientist Award of the President of the Republic’s Cultural Foundation is 75,000 EEK. The award is intended for young Estonian scientists under the age of 35 years, who have a doctoral degree and are conducting research at an Estonian or foreign university.

The Young Scientist Award is financed by Väino Kaldoja.

Nominations must comprise of a written application, including personal details and curriculum vitae; a description of the research being conducted; a list of published research work relevant to the research in question; and at least two references from tutors or teachers. Nominations may be submitted by the young scientists themselves or their tutors or employers, as well as by members of the Board of the Cultural Foundation.

All of the documents related to nominations for the award must be submitted to the Cultural Foundation by 19th November 2010, at the latest (date on postal stamp included), to Weizenbergi 39, 15050 Tallinn, or communicated, signed digitally, to [email protected].

Last year, President Ilves granted the Young Scientist Award to physicist Mait Müntel.

Youth mobility agreement between Estonia and Canada enters force

The 1st of August marked the entry into force of a youth mobility agreement between Estonia and Canada, which gives Estonian and Canadian citizens aged 18-35 an opportunity to live and work in each other’s country for a short term (up to 1 year).

Minister of Foreign Affairs Urmas Paet says the agreement gives people more opportunities to pursue academic or vocational education, gain work experience and develop a better understanding of the other country’s languages, cultures and society. “The agreement lays a foundation for improving the competitiveness of the two countries’ educational institutions and entrepreneurs,” said Paet.

Under the agreement, young adults age 18-35 will be able to work and pursue in-service studies in the host country on the basis of a previously agreed employment contract. Registered students and enrolled university students will be able to undertake a pre-approved internship or studies in the respective host countries. The agreement also affords the opportunity for the participants to travel in the host country and accept short-term employment.

The agreement sets forth the precise conditions for entering Canada. Estonian participants in the programme must meet the requirements of Canadian immigration acts, substantiate sufficient funds to cover the initial costs in Canada, and have health insurance. What is Room 101 for an Estonian?

In Orwell’s “1984,” the main protagonist, Winston Smith, is brutally tortured and mercilessly beaten in the Ministry of Love. In the course of his torment he becomes aware from other prisoners that there is a place inside the ministry where something even worse is going on — Room 101.

Later he is given the opportunity to ask a question on any subject what so ever, but he doesn’t really want the answers to the questions he had been seeking throughout the story, he only wants to know one thing.

“What is in Room 101?”

In Room 101, it turns out, is the worst thing in the World. It varies from person to person. It could be death by fire, or burial alive. “It is worse than death, it is unendurable.” In Winston’s case, for those of as we all know, it is rats.

Estonia has it’s own Room 101, as any visitor to the country can observe. The notion of national extinction, the fear the nation might die because there simply aren’t enough Estonians left any more,

This is a real fear it happened to the Livonians previously.

As a colleague said to me once, “what is important to me is that I can speak in my language to my grandchildren.”

Programm Euroopa Noored toetas noorteprojekte üle 7,5 miljoni krooniga

Youth and Europe:

Toetati 13 rahvusvahelist noortevahetust, mis annavad Eesti ja teiste riikide noortele võimaluse ühistegevuse käigus endi jaoks olulisi teemasid käsitleda ning üksteise kultuurilisi sarnasusi ja erinevusi tundma õppida. MTÜ Headest korraldab augustis projekti noorte tööhõive teemal, kus osalevad Eesti, Taani, Belgia, Austria, Hispaania, Itaalia, Küprose ja Sloveenia töötud noored. Õpitakse end ja üksteist paremini tundma ning arendatakse koostöö-, suhtlemis- ja analüüsioskusi.

Kärdla linnavalitsus korraldab aga juulis noortevahetuse Saksamaalt, Rootsist, Soomest ja Hiiumaalt pärit noortele, mille käigus õpivad noored aktiivset eluhoiakut ning arendavad keskkonnateadlikkust.

Noortealgatuste alaprogrammis, mis seab keskmesse noorte tegevused oma kogukonna heaks, toetati seitset projekti. Näiteks koostab noortegrupp Sophia koos Slovakkia noortega lauamängu ”Tunne iseennast”, mis käsitleb inimest kui tervikut – psühholoogiat, anatoomiat, sotsioloogiat jne.

Sänna Kultuurimõis propageerib aga jalgratta kasutamist. Noortele õpetatakse jalgratta hooldamist ja parandamist nii praktiliste töötubade kui blogi ja animafilmi abil.

Euroopa vabatahtliku teenistuse raames tuleb Eestisse 22 vabatahtlikku erinevatest Euroopa riikidest, aga ka Armeeniast, Venemaalt ja Türgist. Peamiselt asuvad noored tegutsema noorteorganisatsioonides, lasteaedades ning sotsiaal- ja noortekeskustes. Kolm Eesti noort lähevad vabatahtlikuks Gruusiasse ja Armeeniasse.

Kindergartens forced to give up music lessons

TALLINN - Judging by the results of the poll, held by the Estonian Teachers’ Union, in 34 kindergartens located in Tallinn, music teachers are forced to work for only half of the regulation salary and even carry out the functions of over teachers.

The Union, fretted by such situation, has sent the Administrative Board of Tallinn and the Ministry of Education a complaint letter, as the teaching of music in kindergartens and beginner schools can become impossible, because of the lack of finances and the incapability to make a more effective schedule.  

The Union has questioned 53 kindergarten music teachers, and has come to a conclusion, that 34 of them have experienced a salary cut.

Tallinn vice-Mayor Kaia Jappinen, who is responsible for the educational sphere refused to comment on the situation.

* The Youth Information Fair TEEVIIT is aimed at providing young people and people who work with them  with as much information as possible on education possibilities, leisure time activities, courses and trainings, material on methods, employment and everything else which concerns young people both in Estonia as well as abroad.

The idea to organize the Youth Information Fair TEEVIIT was born in 1994. The fair is organized by the Estonian Youth Work Centre (ENTK) and the Estonian Ministry of Education and Research (HTM).

The Youth Information Fair TEEVIIT 2005 was visited by over 19 500 people during the three days and 155 exhibitors participated in the fair. Compared to previous years, the number of foreign exhibitors has increased by 50 % in 2005.
