Stenbock House – The Government calls on all drivers to attach a black ribbon to their vehicles on Friday, to commemorate traffic casualties.
“Attaching a black ribbon to your car should be a sign indicating that our society needs more benevolence, more caring for one’s fellow citizens,” said Prime Minister Andrus Ansip at a Government’s press conference.
While introducing the traffic accident statistics, the Prime Minister admitted that with 25 casualties, July is the darkest month on record in recent years. The number of fatal traffic accidents has only been higher in 1999 and 1997, when the number of victims was 28 and 30, respectively.
Within the past 7 months, the police have caught 6800 intoxicated drivers, more than 10 000 drivers who exceeded the speed limit by more than 20 km per hour, and 8000 persons who did not possess a driving licence.
