Lidl's decision to give up expansion plans in Estonia is bad for the country as its retail sector needs more competition, according to Estonia's economic affairs minister. "We are not happy with competition in Estonia", Edgar Savisaar said, adding "In the three Baltic states combined, the market is eight million people, so I can't understand the argument".
Lidl had announced on Wednesday that it has given up plans to expand to Estonia, saying it “has changed its strategy, because the Estonian market is too small". The Estonian website of Lidl has also been closed down.
