A commission charged with selecting the best route and method to connect the island Saaremaa with the mainland has narrowed the choice down to two. One route runs alongside the current Virtsu-Kuivastu ferry and the other across the northern tip of the island of Viirelaid. The project will cost at least 175 million euros and will be ready no sooner than 2014.
The commission has yet to decide whether a bridge or a tunnel would be best, but it did say a tunnel would cost two times more money.
