Accession states reap rewards of EU membership

When 10 new countries joined the European Union last May, pessimists warned that it could end in political and economic disaster. Optimists predicted that enlargement would bring benefits, but even they thought it would take years of hard work.

In fact, the first year of membership has turned out better for the new members than even the staunchest supporters of enlargement dared hope.
