New statistics shows that the total number of crimes in Tallinn fell by 3 percent last year.
At the same time the number of crimes committed by drug addicts has been increasing and amounts to a third of all crimes.
Drug addicts were behind half of break-ins to cars and thefts in retail stores. 34 percent of criminals caught for breaking into apartments were drug addicts.
According to the police chief Robert Antropov, the police registerd 547 fewer crimes last year, but solved 3,587 crimes more. The number of crimes registered by the police has remained at around 53,000 a year for the las three years.
“I am satisfied to see such results, but a lot remains to be down,” said Antropov.
He added that Estonia cannot be satisfied as long as it remains on top of the list of countries with the highest number of suicides, number of people who have died in traffic accidents, alcohol consumption, proliferation of AIDS and drug addiction.
