Edgar Savisaar, Mayor of Tallinn and chairman of the Centre Party, believes that now that Schibsted, the owner of Postimees daily, is interested to sell the paper, the Estonian state should take the opportunity and buy it, writes Delfi.
Savisaar says that it's a problem that the Estonian state does not have an influential newspaper in public ownership. "Estonia has a fairly influential public broadcaster ERR which has its television and radio arm. Although they are not politically balanced, there is no doubt that the Estonian state needs a strong media organization," writes Savisaar.
“As a Prime Minister, I was involved in the privatization of Postimees’ precedessor Edasi to its editors who were led by Mart Kadastik. I still think it was the right thing to do at that time that strongly helped Estonia to become independent. In the hindsight, it was also more transparent and practical than the covert privatization of Rahva Hääl under Mart Laar.
