Carmen Kass & Jonas Mekas honored by U.S Baltic Foundation

***Carmen Kass was honored by the U.S.-Baltic Foundation at the USBF Gala Awards in Washington D.C last week.

Carmen was awarded a Baltic Image Enhancement Award. Filmaker Jonas Mekas, founder of the Film-Makers Cooperative was awarded with a Baltic Cultural Achievement Award.

Mekas once wrote : “Warhol seems to have incorporated all the transitoriness of things into his very aesthetics, and that’s why it seems to me that his cinema is really about the transitoriness of the medium and the transitory state of all things. About the transitoriness of all existence and all art.”

Kadri Nõgu for Miss Universe 2008 !

Miss Universe 2008, the 57th Miss Universe beauty pageant, will be held at the Crown Convention Center (Diamond Bay Resort) in Nha Trang, Vietnam on July 14, 2008. At the conclusion of the final night of competition, outgoing titleholder Riyo Mori will crown her successor.

Over 80 contestants are expected to compete in the event^[5] which will be broadcast on NBC in the United States and to over 180 countries via CNBC and Telemundo.

Estonian top model Tiiu Kuik has already appeared on multiple international Vogue magazine covers, strutted her stuff on the catwalk for dozens of top designers, including Louis Vuitton, Alexander McQueen and Chanel, and became the face of CoverGirl cosmetics. In 2000, while attending a food fair in her hometown of Tallinn, Tiiu Kuik was discovered by the owner of the "TopModel" agency. The then 13-year-old Tiiu Kuik soon found herself in Japan, and later, Italy.

Her career really began taking off in 2003 after she appeared in Ready to Wear shows for Jil Sander, Calvin Klein, Versace, and several other top designers. Her big break came when she opened Gucci's Fall/Winter 2003 extravaganza. She was invited to open the design house’s show once again for their Spring/Summer 2004 campaign.

Tiiu Kuik became as demanded for catwalk shows as for advertising and magazine spreads. She graced the cover of Australian Vogue's July 2004 issue, and has since appeared on the covers of German, Mexican and U.S. published "en Espanol" editions of the popular revue. Her print campaign credits include Neiman Marcus, Barney's, Bill Blass, and Christian Dior's J'Adore fragrance.

The waif model made her haute couture debut in 2004, and has appeared in important showcases for Christian Dior, Jean-Paul Gaultier and Christian Lacroix. Tiiu has also appeared in ready-to-wear shows for Giorgio Armani, John Galliano, Dsquared2, and Baby Phat.
Tiiu Kuik's agencies include the Major Model Management's New York, Milan and Paris branches, as well as the Storm Models.

HELLO DOLLY

Michael Kors is an “American Idol” devotee and an ardent Dolly Parton fan (remember how he kicked off his spring 2006 runway show with “Jolene” ?).

On Tuesday night, his two obsessions came together when he was an audience member on “American Idol,” which had a Parton theme.

Kors, who is in Los Angeles this week shooting the fall campaign with Mario Testino and models Carmen Kass and Noah Mills, was unaware of the theme when he requested the tickets.

But he’ll be taking his newfound ties to the show a step further : The “American Idol” producers have asked the designer to tape a public service announcement, which will air during the “Idol Gives Back” benefit show next Wednesday.

He’s been in talks with supermodel Carmen Kass, who is working on launching her own modeling agency.

It’s based on the “street people” phenom, spearheaded by street-style snappers like "Face Hunter" Yvan Rodic, who was also in attendance at Pugh's show.

Carmen said she’s sick of models getting the short end of the stick after traditional agencies take their cut of their earnings. Given that she is reported to earn $3 million a year, we’re pleased she’s still thinking about the little people.

Gucci's "G hair" Carmen Kass

Gucci marks the spot with a G in their latest press campaign, model Carmen Kass* is pictured pulling down her knickers and showing off body hair shaved into the letter 'G'.

Mario Testino shot the image he calls 'Pubic Enemy' and it's displayed in Vogue's February edition. Some people have called the image 'vile, coarse and degrading to women'.

The Advertising Standards Authority in the UK, which has the power to ban offensive material, said it was investigating after receiving a number of complaints.

Gucci boss Tom Ford is used to this kind of attention, he was behind the controversial images of model Sophie Dahl in the Yves St Laurent Opium perfume campaign two years ago. It became the most complained about ad in the ASA's history. Also he sells perfume with full frontal male nudity.

John Beyer, director of Mediawatchuk, called for an immediate ban of the image ;

"The companies involved clearly release these kind of pictures to create as much publicity as possible, but it's a thoroughly unpleasant and irresponsible tactic. We can't simply ignore them.

Imagery showing young women in this way is extremely harmful to society, and should not be appearing in mainstream magazines.

The ASA has a duty to ensure that advertisements are decent, and this clearly isn't. It's deeply offensive and should be banned immediately."

A spokesman for Gucci lets us know : "All our important players are in Milan at the moment and nobody is around to speak about the picture." Toasting in grappa, for a controversial stunt well done, I'm sure.
