Tiiu Kuik
Estonian Fashion Model, Age 25
I first met Tiiu four years ago inside Indiana University’s most distinguished party duplex, the “L room”. She was model lounging corner-side while I was most likely attempting to decipher the contents of that nights jungle juice (unsuccessfully, I should add). We met again on an Italian Glamour shoot at the Setai Residences on Fifth Avenue in New York City. And contrary to popular belief and to my own delight, models eat! Or at least this one does… We navigated through a buffet of food and talked boys, favorite city spots, night life (or lack thereof in both our cases) as she shared with me her ’5 Things Your Mother Should Have Told You’
1. Date Short Men - “Date men who are shorter than you. Date anybody that makes you happy! I think its old fashioned to concentrate on trivial attributes such as height, looks etc.. Because the couple presented in everyday media and pop-culture is usually very one dimensional, we start to think that its supposed to be that way in real life too. Ps: I’m 6’2 and my boyfriend is 5’7 and YES, I do wear heels and YES, he loves it.”
2. Coconut Milk - “My hair is super fine. I’ve found that coconut milk is great as a hair mask. It softens, adds shine and best of all, it improves hair growth. I swear that my hair looks and feels thicker right after using it.”
3. Stop Touching Your Face – “Get in the habit of not touching your face. Throughout the day, hands get a lot dirtier than your face does. Touching your face with unwashed hands will cause breakouts and clogged pores. I think its the single best trick for great skin.”
(I should interject here that as I wrote this post, I caught myself resting my face in my hands, guilty!)
4. Switch it up – “I seriously dislike exercising, but I’ve found it easier to stay committed to working out by switching out my workout routine every now and then. I’ve tried martial arts, different types of yoga, swimming, kick boxing and even ballet. Not only does it keep it interesting, different sports are great for different parts of your body. You might discover muscles you never even knew existed. Currently gathering courage for a Zumba class, myself. Maybe trapeze… Oh, and the new trampoline classes at my gym look fun too!”
5. Don’t eat fat-free - “You need some fat to absorb certain vitamins, keep your bones strong and immune system up. Eat good fats like avocado, fish, nuts, olive oil etc.. Good fats can actually improve your cholesterol level. Fat-free foods are often filled up with sugar and chemicals to make up for the taste. They are also not as satisfying, causing you to get hungry faster, therefore making them a poor choice on many levels.”
