I expected Estonia to fall in the corruption standing

Tarmu Tammerk, the chairman of the association Corruption Free Estonia, said that he personally thought Estonia’s ranking in the standing of corruption will be worse than last year due the several corruption cases in the country during the year.
“But it came out that those cases have not taken us down in the standing of corruption perception,” Tammerk said and added that probably the Estonia’s anti-corruption strategy for 2008-2010 was considered more important, postimees.ee writes.
Tammerk noted that the new corruption cases, inadequate control over rural municipalities finances and public tenders, and poor supervision of parties’ financing may lower Estonia’s position next year.
Estonia has been hit by a certain strike back in the corruption perception index. In 2006, Estonia was ranked 24th. This year Estonia rose one position to 27th.
